The Offshore High Voltage Station (OHVS), also known as the substation,
is the beating heart of the Norther wind farm.

OHVS components
A large transformer inside the OHVS steps up the electricity generated by the wind turbines to 220 kV. From there, a 26 km export cable carries the power to the Belgian grid, operated by the transmission system operator Elia.
But the OHVS contains much more than a transformer. Spread across four levels are the HV Switchgear, emergency batteries, heating and cooling systems, and various monitoring systems that assess the health of these critical components. The SCADA system further transmits technical data and alerts from the OHVS to Norther’s control center.
The OHVS was designed, built, and shipped by contractors Iemants and C.G. Engie Fabricom from its site in Hoboken, Antwerp. Installation was completed on 22 August 2018.
